Understanding the total portfolio approach to investing

For years, institutional investors have built portfolios by making decisions within clearly defined asset classes. But as portfolios become more complex, there is an opportunity to step back and ask a bigger question: how do all investments work together to support the goals of the entire portfolio? That is the thinking behind the Total Portfolio Approach (TPA).

Rather than looking at investments in isolation, TPA considers how different strategies interact, where risks may overlap, how liquidity needs are met and how each investment contributes to long-term objectives. And adopting this mindset does not have to mean abandoning Strategic Asset Allocation. Organizations can move along the TPA continuum in a way that reflects their objectives, governance structure, and desired level of flexibility.
