The technology revolution: How advanced medical technology is transforming earlier risk detection

Written by TELUS Health | September 26, 2025

Imagine if you could detect risk factors that may indicate a potential heart attack years before it happens or help detect cancer at an earlier stage. This isn't science fiction – it's the reality of advanced medical technology today. The stage at which cancer is discovered makes a big difference. The five-year survival rate for women with Stage I breast cancer is 100 per cent, while for Stage IV breast cancer it drops to just 23 per cent.

State-of-the-art technology may help enhance how we detect and assess health risks. By analyzing vast amounts of health data in ways that weren't possible before, advanced preventive health systems may help give us new insights to understand our risks better and take proactive steps to enable healthier and longer lives.

The benefits of advanced technology in healthcare

  • Earlier risk detection: Timing can be the difference between a condition developing or being prevented entirely. By example, advanced imaging technology can identify the presence of plaque in the arteries in apparently healthy individuals, with research showing that 63 per cent of asymptomatic adults aged 40 to 54 had detectable arterial disease before any symptoms appeared. This early identification of cardiovascular risk allows for preventive interventions through lifestyle changes or medications years before a heart attack or stroke might occur, demonstrating how advanced technology enables true risk detection rather than just earlier disease treatment.

  • Timely condition detection: The earlier a condition is detected, the more treatment options you have available. For example, colon and rectal cancers have a five-year survival rate of over 90 per cent when caught at Stage I, but this declines dramatically to just 12 to 16 per cent at later stages. Many diseases that are fatal in late stages are highly treatable when caught early.

  • Personalized treatment: Advanced technology may help physicians choose effective treatments based on your unique genetic makeup and disease characteristics. This means your treatment plan is tailored specifically to you, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
