Resilience, rest and recharge: Mental health tips for life’s demands

Written by TELUS Health | May 9, 2025

As we age, the pace of life doesn’t always slow down, in many cases, it speeds up. Between career responsibilities, caregiving roles and health concerns, many Canadians in midlife and beyond are navigating more than ever. It’s no surprise that burnout, anxiety and sleep issues are becoming increasingly common, even among high functioning, active adults.

Fortunately, there are simple, effective ways to support your mental wellbeing, and it starts with awareness and proactive care.

Burnout can affect everyone

While burnout is commonly linked to early career pressure, older adults face their own distinct challenges with emotional and physical exhaustion. Many struggle to balance demanding careers with family obligations and caregiving duties. Left unchecked, chronic stress can contribute to poor sleep, reduced cognitive function and long-term mental health challenges.

Habits that help to avoid burnout:

  • Build protected time into your day for breaks, even 10 minutes of calm can reset your nervous system
  • Learn to recognize the early signs of burnout, such as irritability or fatigue that doesn't improve with rest
  • Try stacking habits, for example, pairing a daily walk with a no phone policy to mentally decompress.

The mind-body link in healthy aging

Mental health plays a central role in how we age. Managing stress, improving sleep and fostering a strong sense of purpose can contribute to better cognitive health and improved quality of life. Research suggests that a sense of purpose in life can serve as a protective factor against reported cognitive decline, particularly among middle-aged adults.

Sleep, in particular, is a cornerstone of healthy aging. It’s recommended that you get 7–9 hours per night. This guidance reflects sleep’s vital role in health—poor sleep is linked to mood disorders, memory issues, and even cardiovascular risks.

Habits that help with healthy aging:

Support when you need it

Supporting your mental wellbeing isn’t a luxury, it's a long-term investment in your healthspan. By addressing burnout, improving sleep and staying connected, you can protect your mental fitness just as intentionally as your physical health.
