In this installment of our series highlighting TELUS Health team members meet Philip Mullen, he’s our VP, Retirement and Benefits solutions. Philip’s role as a leader is critical in ensuring that our customers and their employees receive the best possible retirement plans, and ultimately experience increased financial security and overall wellbeing.
Q: Thanks for sitting down with us Philip, can you share what ‘a day in the life’ looks like in your role with TELUS Health?
A: Every day is different which creates its own energy and excitement! However, a typical day will involve a lot of collaboration with colleagues across Canada and around the world to support our customers and communities.
Q: As a global company serving so many different customers in so many different countries, I’m sure you’re busy collaborating across time zones! What would you say your goals are for the retirement consulting line of business this year?
A: Our key objectives don’t change much from one year to the next, which is the sign of a successful strategy. We focus on supporting our customers and communities with the best advice and service to ensure their people have reliability and security when it comes to their pension plans. Everyone wants to enjoy a dignified retirement. This is a critical factor in ensuring they have the financial wellness to perform at their best every day. We also have a laser focus on ensuring we have the best talent on our teams and that they are highly engaged in the work they do – which in turn delivers incredible outcomes for our customers and communities.
Q: Retirement Consulting plays an important role in providing the financial health pillar at TELUS Health. What does financial health mean when we think about the overall health of organizations and their people?
Financial health means something different for each individual, which is why it's important to ensure there are no “one size fits all” solutions. There are good practices and behaviors that can support financial health, but each client and individual has different objectives – so we focus on delivering what is important to them. We support many of our customers with the running and sustainability of their pension plans, and the peace of mind that financial security in retirement brings is the cornerstone of an individual’s financial health. Reliability and security are two of the most critical elements and when these are present it has a positive impact on mental health, physical health and overall wellbeing.
Q: Financial security truly is a basic human need, and with so many employees and their families struggling these days due to the rising cost of living, you can really see how it has an impact on mental health and wellbeing. Can you talk a little bit about what needs we are filling for organizations?
A: We have the ambition to be the most trusted wellbeing provider globally which means we can’t just focus on point solutions or one pillar of wellbeing. We support our customers with all the elements that encompass an individual’s total wellbeing to ensure there is connectivity of experiences and services in supporting their needs.
Q: Speaking of total wellbeing, how do TELUS’ values resonate with you, and support your personal health and wellbeing?
A: TELUS’ value of passionately putting our customers and communities first is at the heart of our company. Social purpose is not something which is part of our strategy, rather it is at the core of our strategy – which makes it very easy to come to work every day. That sense of purpose and feeling that we are making a real difference in communities across Canada and around the world has an incredibly positive impact on my personal wellbeing. I get to work with very smart talented people who are constantly challenging how we can be better and doing it in a fun and collaborative way.
